About the 8-hour supported scaffold installer and remover refresher
The 8-Hour Supported Scaffold Installer and Remover Refresher is an NYC DOB-approved course that keeps your installer and remover certification current. It is for workers who already completed the 32-Hour Supported Scaffold Installer and Remover course. It is a different course from the 4-hour Supported Scaffold User course, which covers people who work from the scaffold.
NYC Building Code section 3314.4.5.1 requires workers who install, adjust, repair, maintain or remove supported scaffolds 40 feet or taller, including the person supervising that work, to take an 8-hour refresher every four years after the 32-hour course. The same rule covers sidewalk sheds that serve as the base for a scaffold of that height.
The refresher follows the same topic list as the 32-hour course, with a focus on code, rule and incident updates since your last training. When you pass, your training provider updates your Supported Scaffold Installer and Remover certification on your DOB Worker Wallet card. Job sites check the card with DOB's Training Connect app. The Worker Wallet does not replace your SST card.
Classes are instructor-led, in person or hybrid. Lectures and demonstrations can be taught live online over video, but the hands-on scaffold work and the performance test are done in person, with the whole class together. The course cannot be taken fully online or self-paced. You finish with a written multiple choice test and a hands-on performance test on a scaffold.
Hands-on training
Done in person: harness fit test and inspection, tool tethering, erection and dismantling practice on frame, tube and clamp, and system scaffolds, and a hands-on performance test on a scaffold.

Only part of it. DOB allows this course in person or as a hybrid, where lectures and demonstrations are taught live online over video and the hands-on parts are done in person. For the live online sessions, your training provider must confirm your identity before you get access, you must attest that you are the person taking the class and will finish it without help, and your webcam must stay on for the whole class while the provider monitors attendance. The course cannot be taken fully online or self-paced.
What do I get when I finish?
When you pass, your training provider updates your Supported Scaffold Installer and Remover certification on your DOB Worker Wallet card through DOB's Training Connect platform. Providers may charge an administrative fee for the card.
