About the Lift Director Refresher
The 8-Hour Lift Director Refresher is an NYC DOB-approved course for registered Lift Directors and licensed Master Riggers. It is a prerequisite for renewing a Lift Director registration and a Master Rigger license.
Lift Directors must complete a DOB-approved course of at least 8 hours within the one year before renewal. Master Riggers must complete this course and the 16-Hour Rigging Supervisor Refresher within the one year before renewal. The refresher does not renew anything by itself. You still file your renewal with DOB.
The class follows the same subject list as the 32-Hour Lift Director course, with a focus on what has changed since your last renewal and on recent NYC incidents. It covers failure case studies, OSHA Subpart CC, NYC code and DOB rules, DOT and NYC Transit requirements, site roles, the Lift Director's authority, crew resource management, meetings, inspections, logs, plans, setup, securing, weather and wind, critical picks, hoisting personnel, lifts over occupied buildings, power lines, fall protection, and emergency procedures.
Classes are instructor-led, in person or live online, or a mix of both. There is no hands-on component and no self-paced option. Demonstrations may be shown live or on video. You must attend the full 8 hours of instruction, and the class ends with a written multiple-choice assessment. If you are registering as a Lift Director for the first time, take the 32-Hour Lift Director course instead.

I am a Master Rigger. Is this the only course I need?

Does this course renew my registration?
No. It is a prerequisite for renewal. You still file the renewal with DOB.
Who needs this refresher?
