Your NYC SST Worker Card renewal under Option 2
SST Worker Card Renewal: Option 2 is an 8-hour package of three NYC DOB Site Safety Training courses: 4-Hour Fall Prevention, 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness and 2-Hour Tool Box Talks. It satisfies Option 2 of DOB's two renewal options for an SST Worker Card. Option 1 uses 4-Hour Fall Prevention and 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher instead.
SST cards are valid for 5 years from issuance, and Local Law 196 of 2017 requires a current card on NYC sites that need a Site Safety Plan. Under Local Law 10 of 2026, a card that expires on or after May 3, 2026 can be renewed up to one year after it expires. You cannot work on site with an expired card during that year. After the year, you need a new card and the full training. You do not retake OSHA to renew.
Since August 1, 2026, DOB has included 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness in some renewal options, always paired with 2-Hour Tool Box Talks or 2-Hour Pre-Task Meeting. This package uses Tool Box Talks. This option suits Worker card holders who do not work on scaffolds, or who want the mental health and substance misuse training that Local Law 10 of 2026 added. 4-Hour Fall Prevention is the renewal course; new cards need 8-Hour Fall Prevention. All three courses are awareness-level.
Every course is online and self-paced, with narrated slides, knowledge checks after each module and a final exam. You need 70% to pass each exam. Seat time is tracked, so no course can be finished faster than its required hours. Take the courses in any order. You will be asked to verify your identity. When you finish, your training provider processes your renewal following DOB's process.

What you'll learn
Drawn from the training objectives in DOB's outlines for the courses in this package.
- Name the three types of fall hazard and the height at which fall protection becomes required.
- Calculate the clearance a personal fall arrest system needs, and say what a prompt rescue plan contains.
- Set a ladder so it does not fail, and state the stairway, stairrail and handrail requirements.
- Recognize the warning signs that a coworker needs help now, and ask directly about suicide.
- Recognize an opioid overdose, carry out the response steps in order, and state what naloxone does and does not do.
- Build a toolbox talk around a hazard and its control, and check that the crew understood it.

Questions
My card has expired. Can I still renew?
Under Local Law 10 of 2026, a card that expires on or after May 3, 2026 can be renewed up to one year after it expires. You cannot work on site with an expired card during that year. After the year is up, you need a new card, which means the full new-card training.
Do I have to retake OSHA to renew?
No. OSHA does not need to be retaken for an SST card renewal. You only complete the refresher courses in your chosen renewal option.
How is this option different from Option 1?
Both Worker options are 8 hours and both start with 4-Hour Fall Prevention. SST Worker Card Renewal: Option 1 adds 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher. SST Worker Card Renewal: Option 2 adds 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness and 2-Hour Tool Box Talks. Either one renews a Worker card.
Why is Mental Health Awareness part of this renewal?
Since August 1, 2026, DOB has added 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness to some renewal options, always paired with 2-Hour Tool Box Talks or 2-Hour Pre-Task Meeting. This package fills that slot with 2-Hour Tool Box Talks. The course covers mental health and wellness, suicide risk and prevention, and alcohol and substance misuse, the topics Local Law 10 of 2026 added.
When should I take the renewal training?
Finish the refresher training before your card expires, and within the year before you renew. If your card has already expired, you can still renew within the one-year grace period, but you cannot work on site until it is renewed.
I want a Supervisor card. Is this the right package?
No. Moving from a Worker card to a Supervisor card is an upgrade, not a renewal. See the 22-Hour SST Supervisor Upgrade.
Where can I get help if the Mental Health Awareness course brings something up?
Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free, confidential and open 24/7.
Can I take the courses in any order?
Yes. Take them in any order and stop and return as you need to. Seat time is tracked, so each course takes at least its required hours, and you need 70% on each final exam.
