About the 40-Hour Hoisting Machine Operator course
The 40-Hour Hoisting Machine Operator course is an NYC DOB-approved course built around the rules and hazards of running cranes and hoisting machines in New York City. It is one of the prerequisites for a NYC Hoisting Machine Operator license and for a Limited Hoisting Machine Operator license for an articulating boom crane, mini crane, or telehandler.
You must finish the course within the one year before you apply for your license. The course does not give you the license. DOB also requires valid national crane operator certification. DOB currently recognizes NCCCO certifications, and the certifications you need depend on the license class (A, B, or C) or limited license you apply for. Those written and practical certification exams are taken separately, not in this class.
The course covers NYC-specific requirements from DOB, the Department of Transportation, and NYC Transit, along with OSHA Subpart CC, the 2022 Building Code Chapter 33, and DOB rules for cranes and derricks. You also work through inspection, maintenance, setup, operations in a dense city, load charts, safety devices, lifting, and signaling.
Classes are instructor-led, in person or live online, or a mix of both. There is no hands-on component and no self-paced option. Demonstrations may be shown live or on video. You must attend the full 40 hours of instruction, and the course ends with a written multiple-choice assessment. Once licensed, you renew with the 8-Hour Hoisting Machine Operator Refresher.

Questions
Can I take this course live online?
Yes. DOB allows this course in person, live online (Virtual Live), or as a hybrid of the two. It is not offered as a self-paced course. For live online classes, your identity is confirmed before you get access, you attest that you will complete the training without help, attendance is monitored the whole time, and your webcam must stay on for the entire class.
Does this course give me a NYC Hoisting Machine Operator license?
No. It is one of the prerequisites. You apply for the license through DOB, and you also need valid national crane operator certification and must meet the experience and other requirements for your license class.
Which national certifications does DOB require?
DOB currently accepts NCCCO certifications. A Class C license requires the two telescopic boom certifications, a Class A adds lattice boom, and a Class B adds tower crane. Extra certifications are needed for equipment like articulating boom cranes, pile drivers, and rotating telehandlers.
How long is my course completion good for?
You must complete the course within the one year before you apply for your license. If more than a year passes, you will need to take it again before applying.
Who needs this course?
Anyone applying for a NYC Hoisting Machine Operator license or a Limited HMO license for an articulating boom crane, mini crane, or telehandler. That includes experienced operators certified elsewhere who are new to NYC.
Are there prerequisites to enroll?
DOB's outline sets no prior course for this class, but you must be able to read and write English, since the course is taught in English. Check that you meet the license's experience and certification requirements before you apply.
What do I get when I finish?
After you attend all 40 hours and pass the written multiple-choice assessment, you receive proof of completion from your training provider to include with your license application.
How do I keep my license once I have it?
Take the 8-Hour Hoisting Machine Operator Refresher within the one year before each license renewal and keep your national certification current. The refresher does not replace the DOB renewal application or fee.
