About the HMO Class B Rating course
The 8-Hour Hoisting Machine Operator Class B Rating course is an NYC DOB-approved course for operators who already hold a Class B Hoisting Machine Operator license. It is a prerequisite for adding a rating for a specific crane make and model to that license.
The course is specific to one machine. DOB's outline requires it to cover the manufacturer's make, model, and carrier type (wheel-mounted or crawler). It must be given by the manufacturer, an entity the manufacturer authorizes, a registered NYS Department of Labor apprenticeship program, a NYS Education Department chartered school, or another entity acceptable to DOB. The instructor must be trained by the manufacturer on that machine. You must complete it within the one year before you apply to add the rating.
Training covers the crane's controls and how they change by operating mode, its computer systems and how to set them up to match the configuration, operational aids and safety devices, wind and weather limits, and the procedures to boom up, jackknife, and lay down the boom or boom and jib. Special attention goes to configurations with booms or boom and jib combinations over 300 feet.
Classes are instructor-led, in person or live online, or a mix of both. There is no hands-on component and no self-paced option. The class ends with a written multiple-choice assessment. The course does not add the rating by itself; you apply to DOB for that.

Questions
Can I take this course live online?
Yes. DOB allows this course in person, live online (Virtual Live), or as a hybrid of the two. It is not offered as a self-paced course. For live online classes, your identity is confirmed before you get access, you attest that you will complete the training without help, attendance is monitored the whole time, and your webcam must stay on for the entire class.
Who needs this course?
Class B Hoisting Machine Operators who want to add a rating for a specific crane make and model to their NYC license. It is not for Class A or Class C licensees or for new license applicants.
Does the course cover any crane?
No. Each class covers one manufacturer's make, model, and carrier type. DOB may allow substantially equivalent makes and models to be included. Make sure the class matches the crane you want rated.
Who is allowed to teach it?
DOB requires the course to be given by the manufacturer, an entity the manufacturer authorizes, a registered NYS apprenticeship program, a NYS chartered school, or another entity acceptable to DOB, with an instructor trained by the manufacturer on that machine.
What do I get when I finish?
After you attend all 8 hours and pass the written multiple-choice assessment, you receive proof of completion for that make and model. You then apply to DOB to add the rating to your license.
How long is the completion good for?
You must complete the course within the one year before you apply to add the rating. DOB's outline does not set a refresher for this course.
Are there prerequisites?
You must hold a NYC Class B Hoisting Machine Operator license and be able to read and write English. Getting a Class B license itself takes years of experience as a Class A licensee and NCCCO certifications including tower crane.
