The 40-hour site safety course in NYC
This is the NYC DOB-approved 40-hour course in construction and demolition site safety. It is the training step for three DOB site safety credentials: Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, and Construction Superintendent.
For a Site Safety Manager certificate, you must complete this course within 1 year before you apply, hold a valid SST Supervisor card, meet DOB's experience criteria, and pass DOB's Site Safety Manager exam. For a Site Safety Coordinator certificate, you need the same course within 1 year before applying, a valid SST Supervisor card, and the required experience. For Construction Superintendent registration, one qualification path is 5 years of full-time U.S. experience working with plans in a relevant trade within the last 10 years, plus this course within 1 year before applying and an OSHA 10-hour course within 2 years.
The course gives you a certificate; it does not issue any credential. You apply to DOB Licensing separately. To renew any of the three later, you take the 8-Hour Site Safety (License Requirement and SST) course within the 1 year before each renewal. Under Local Law 10 of 2026 (effective May 3, 2026), this course can also take the place of the 30-hour OSHA course toward a new SST Worker or Supervisor card.
The course is instructor-led and taught in English. DOB allows it in person, live online over video, or hybrid. It has no hands-on component and may not be taken self-paced. It ends with a written multiple-choice assessment.

Questions
Who needs the 40-Hour Site Safety course?
People applying for an NYC Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator certificate, and Construction Superintendent applicants using the experience path that requires a 40-hour site safety course. You must finish it within 1 year before you apply.
Does this course make me a Site Safety Manager?
No. It is one requirement. Site Safety Manager applicants also need a valid SST Supervisor card, the required experience, and a passing score on DOB's Site Safety Manager exam. You then apply to DOB Licensing.
What else do Coordinator and Superintendent applicants need?
Site Safety Coordinator applicants also need a valid SST Supervisor card and the required experience. On the 40-hour path, Construction Superintendent applicants also need 5 years of qualifying experience within the last 10 years and an OSHA 10-hour course taken within 2 years of applying.
How do I renew my certificate or registration later?
Take the 8-Hour Site Safety (License Requirement and SST) course during the 1 year before each renewal, then submit its certificate to DOB with your renewal. You do not repeat the 40-hour course to renew.
Does it count toward an SST card?
Yes, for a new card. Under Local Law 10 of 2026, effective May 3, 2026, the 40-Hour Site Safety course counts as equal to the 30-hour OSHA course toward a new SST card. It fills the 30-hour part of SST Worker card Option 1 and of the Supervisor card; you still need the other required courses.
Can I take it in person or live online?
Either, or a mix of both. DOB allows in person, live online, and hybrid delivery for this course. It cannot be taken self-paced.
What are the rules for live online classes?
For any live online session, DOB requires your training provider to confirm your identity before giving you access, and you must attest that you are the person taking the class and will complete it without help. Your participation is monitored the whole time, and your webcam must stay on for the entire class.
Are there prerequisites to take the course?
