What the 8-hour site safety course covers

8-Hour Site Safety (SST Only) is an NYC DOB Site Safety Training course about how safety is organized and enforced on a New York City construction site. It covers the site safety roles, SST cards, incident reporting, supervision, the OSHA 1926 construction standards, the NYC Construction Codes and local laws, site safety plans, violations and stop work orders, tool safety, and site protocols for concrete, standpipes, scaffolds, sidewalk sheds and cranes.

This course gives SST credit only. It does not renew a Site Safety Manager certificate, a Site Safety Coordinator certificate, or a Construction Superintendent registration, and it does not count toward getting one. The course explains what those roles do so you know who is responsible for what on your site. If you hold one of those credentials, you renew it through the course that renews it.

Local Law 196 of 2017 requires SST cards for construction and demolition workers and supervisors on sites that require a Site Safety Plan. This is a prescribed SST course. It counts toward a new SST Worker card under Option 2, a new SST Supervisor card, the 22-hour Supervisor upgrade, and Supervisor card renewal under Option 2 or Option 3.

The course is online and self-paced, taken with a DOB-Registered Course Provider. It uses narrated slides, knowledge checks after each module, and a final exam. There is no hands-on component. Seat time is tracked, so the course cannot be finished in less than 8 hours. You will be asked to verify your identity. You get 8 hours of SST credit and a certificate of completion.

What you'll learn

Drawn from the training objectives in DOB's outline.

  • Name the five site safety roles (Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Construction Superintendent, Concrete Safety Manager, Fire Safety Manager) and what triggers each.
  • Know who must notify DOB after a construction incident, how fast, and why nothing at the scene can be moved until it is released.
  • Apply OSHA's Focus Four (falls, struck-by, caught-in or between, and electrocution) to what you see on site.
  • Read a site safety plan for the parts that concern you: exits, controlled access zones, fire equipment and the order of work.
  • Know what a stop work order means, full or partial, what work is still allowed under one, and how it gets lifted.
  • Report an unsafe condition to DOB through 311, and know what to do in a jobsite emergency.

Questions

Does this course renew my Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator certificate?

No. It gives SST credit only. It does not renew a Site Safety Manager certificate, a Site Safety Coordinator certificate, or a Construction Superintendent registration.

Does it count toward becoming a Site Safety Manager or Coordinator?

No. The course explains what those roles do, but it is not part of the path to any of those credentials.

Is this the same as the 8-Hour Chapter 33 course?

No. 8-Hour Chapter 33 is the Site Safety Manager renewal course, a different course. This one is 8-Hour Site Safety (SST Only).

Which SST cards does it count toward?

A new Worker card under Option 2, a new Supervisor card, the 22-hour upgrade from a Worker card to a Supervisor card, and Supervisor card renewal under Option 2 or Option 3.
