8-hour site safety renewal course for NYC credentials and SST

This NYC DOB-approved 8-hour course does two jobs. It meets the continuing education requirement to renew a Site Safety Manager certificate, a Site Safety Coordinator certificate, or a Construction Superintendent registration. It also counts as 8 hours of approved Site Safety Training (SST) toward your SST card.

The renewal rule is 1 RCNY 104-06. During the 1 year immediately before you renew, you must complete a DOB-approved course of at least 8 hours covering the site safety provisions of Building Code Chapter 33 and related rules, then submit the certificate of completion to DOB Licensing with your renewal. The course does not renew your credential by itself; you still file the renewal and pay DOB's fee. You do not repeat the 40-hour course.

The SST side comes from Local Law 196 of 2017, which requires workers and supervisors on many NYC sites to complete set hours of approved training and carry an SST card. This course provides 8 of those hours.

Because this version renews DOB certificates, it must be instructor-led. DOB allows it in person, live online over video, or hybrid. It has no hands-on component, and it may not be taken self-paced. A self-paced, SST-only version exists as a separate course, but DOB states that version does not renew a Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, or Construction Superintendent credential. Classes are taught in English, are capped at 40 trainees, and end with a written multiple-choice assessment.

Questions

How is this different from the 8-Hour Site Safety (SST Only) course?

Both give 8 hours of SST credit and cover the same topics. Only this course renews a Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, or Construction Superintendent credential, so it must be taught live by an instructor. The 8-Hour Site Safety (SST Only) course may be offered self-paced online, but DOB states it does not renew any of those credentials.

It provides 8 hours of approved site safety training under Local Law 196 of 2017. Ask your training provider how those hours apply to the card you are working toward or renewing.

Are there prerequisites?
