What the 4-Hour SST Electives package counts toward
The 4-Hour SST Electives package bundles four 1-hour NYC DOB Site Safety Training electives. 1-Hour Stairways and Ladders and 1-Hour Tools Hand and Power are General Electives. 1-Hour Asbestos/Lead Awareness and 1-Hour Job Hazard Analysis are Specialized Electives. That is 2 General and 2 Specialized hours.
A new SST Supervisor Card (62 hours) requires 2 hours of General Electives and 2 hours of Specialized Electives, so this package covers the full elective requirement for that card. It also counts toward Option 2 for a new SST Worker Card, which requires 4 General and 4 Specialized hours. There it covers half, and you need 2 more hours of each. SST cards are required under Local Law 196 of 2017 on sites that need a Site Safety Plan.
This package is for people building a card course by course who already have, or will take separately, the other required courses. If you are buying the 22-Hour SST Supervisor Upgrade or the 32-Hour SST, you do not need this package: both already include these same four electives. Electives are not part of any SST card renewal option. All four courses are awareness-level. Asbestos/Lead Awareness, for example, does not authorize you to remove or disturb asbestos or lead.
Every course is online and self-paced, with narrated slides, knowledge checks after each module and a final exam. You need 70% to pass each exam. Seat time is tracked, so no course can be finished faster than its required hours. Take the courses in any order. You will be asked to verify your identity.

What you'll learn
Drawn from the training objectives in DOB's outlines for the courses in this package.
- Set a portable ladder at the right slope and extension, inspect it, and take a defective one out of service.
- Determine when stairrails and handrails are required, and recognize blocked or unsafe egress during construction.
- State the grounding and ground-fault protection rules for power tools, and the guarding a saw or grinder needs.
- Select the dust control and respiratory protection for a named tool under the silica standard's Table 1.
- Recognize where asbestos and lead are likely on a NYC job, how they harm you, and how to keep from carrying them home.
- Break a job into steps, name the hazards in each, and choose controls, working down from elimination.

Who can enroll
- No course prerequisite to take these courses.
- To count toward a Supervisor card, they must be part of the full 62 hours: 30-Hour OSHA or 40-Hour Site Safety, plus the prescribed courses (or the 22 hours on top of a valid Worker card).
- To count toward a Worker card under Option 2, you also need 10-Hour OSHA, the prescribed courses, and 2 more hours each of General and Specialized Electives.
- Do not buy this package with the 22-Hour or 32-Hour package. Both already include these four courses.
- Electives do not count toward renewing an SST card.
Who it's for
- Workers completing a Supervisor card one course at a time who still need their elective hours
- Workers on the Worker card Option 2 pathway who need part of their 8 elective hours
- Workers who want awareness training on ladders, tools, asbestos and lead, or job hazard analysis
How it works
- Buy the package and sign in to your training account.
- Take the four courses online at your own pace, in any order. Seat time is tracked, so each course takes its full hour.
- Pass the final exam in each course with 70% or better. You will be asked to verify your identity.
- Your training provider records the credit toward your SST card, following DOB's process, once the rest of your required training is complete.
Questions
Which SST card does this count toward?
It covers the full elective requirement for a new Supervisor card (2 General and 2 Specialized hours). It covers half of the 8 elective hours needed for a Worker card under Option 2.
Does this package include 30-Hour OSHA?
No. A Supervisor card also needs 30-Hour OSHA or the 40-Hour Site Safety course, plus the prescribed SST courses. This package is only the elective hours.
Do I still need Mental Health Awareness for a new card?
Yes. Since August 1, 2026, 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness replaced 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness, and only Mental Health Awareness counts toward a new card. It is not in this package.
Can I get a temporary card while I finish?
Workers who completed 10-Hour or 30-Hour OSHA in the past 5 years can get a Temporary SST card, valid for 6 months, while they finish the rest of their training. Ask your training provider whether it applies to you.
I am buying the 22-Hour or 32-Hour package. Do I need this too?
No. Both packages already include these same four electives.
Can I use electives to renew my SST card?
No. None of the renewal options include electives. See the Worker and Supervisor renewal packages.
Does Asbestos/Lead Awareness let me do abatement work?
No. It is awareness-level. It helps you recognize asbestos and lead and know when to stop and ask. It does not authorize you to remove or disturb either material.
Can I take the courses in any order?
Yes. Take them in any order and stop and return as you need to. Seat time is tracked, so each course takes at least its required hours, and you need 70% on each final exam.
